Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities
Your foreign fiancee needs to know that for Canadian citizens, rights come with responsibilities. These include:
• Obeying the law –rule of the law is one of Canada’s basic principles. No person or group of people is above the law.
• Taking responsibility for yourself and your family – this means getting a job, feeding and clothing your family members.
• Serving on a jury – when you have been chosen to serve in a jury, it is your legal obligation to do so. This makes justice system work and is beneficial for all citizens
• Voting in elections – this is a right and a responsibility at the same time. Citizens can vote in federal, provincial and local elections.
• Helping other people in the community by doing volunteer work at food banks, at schools and other locations.
• Protecting and enjoying Canadian heritage and environment by avoiding pollution and protecting Canada’s natural resources.
Who Can Apply for Canadian Citizenship
There are certain requirements to be met in order for your foreign fiancee to apply for Canadian Citizenship:
- She needs to be at least 18 years old
- She needs to hold a permanent resident status
- She needs to have lived in Canada three years out of the past four years.
- She needs to have adequate knowledge of either English and French
- She needs to have no criminal convictions in the three years before she applies
- She needs to understand the rights and responsibilities of a citizen and to understand Canadian culture and values
